Search engine marketing from cosmetics manufacturers rarely used

For the first time, metapeople and metaapes analyse the search engine- and affiliate marketing of the cosmetic industry in the netaspect study "Kosmetik Online 2007".

Over 18 websites of well-known cosmetic brands, e-shops and portals were checked for "Kosmetik Online 2007" for usability and were also valued concerning their suitability for search engines. The result is frightening: only a few sites could be convincing with their contents and web accessibility configuration within the scope of the search engine optimisation.

This result reflects that website operators in the cosmetic industry attach importance to a well designed user interface but not on the source code behind it, the inclusion of significant contents and web accessibility for a search engine crawler.

Furthermore, alternative content or scripting languages that were included where graphic elements were not used unknowingly impeded the search engine that tried to examine the contents of the web page for relevance.

Less than a quarter of the sites examined have been convincing with a logical concept in this area. Good search engine optimisation can certainly be integrated with an attractive user interface.

Websites offering online shops were assessed regarding paid advertisement. It would therefore be important to search for words from the cosmetic and the beauty industry. However this gives sparse results: only some operators are efficiently using the possibility of online advertisement thus a lot of important keywords are still free.

"Unfortunately it is not unusual that big brands are still performing below average in the area of search engine marketing. Most do not know the hidden potential of search engine marketing and how efficient this kind of online advertisement can be" according to Tim Ringel, manager of metapeople, the agency that focuses on search engine marketing (www.metapeople.de).

For the first time when the cosmetics study began in 2001, the online marketing was analysed regarding search engine marketing. By means of several criteria metapeople analysed websites like www.douglas.de, www.yves-rocher.de, www.avon.de and others for their search engine optimisation, firstly for Google which is considered the most important search engine in Germany.

Other key criteria that were looked at were the source text of the webpages, the naming of internal links, the assignment of individual webpage titles and the processing of the contents.

Also the metapeople subsidiary company metaapes (www.metaapes.de) contributed to a special part of the study, examining the affiliate marketing measures of the providers. The test criteria were for example, besides the participation in networks, the advertising media provided or the sphere in the market.

This investigation delivered very interesting results. It became clear that in the affiliate marketing area there is an even more considerable need for action for the companies investigated to offer a competitive affiliate program.
